Boyd Shuford Hilton was an outstanding potter in the Catawba Valley Pottery Region of North Carolina.  He continued the traditions of excellence that were established by the Hilton Pottery Dynasty that began in the mid 1800's.  Boyd Shuford Hilton created pottery in the community of Blackburn only 2 miles from the original site of the John Wesley Hilton (1846-1923) Pottery that began after John Wesley's return from the Civil War.

The Hilton Pottery Dynasty began during a time when their wares were produced for specific functions around the home and farm.  They were among the few established pottery families to make the transition in the early 1900's from utilitarian wares to more decorative pottery for the ever growing tourist trade in North Carolina.

Boyd Shuford Hilton's pottery reflects the rich traditions of his past.  Also, his own unique style was imprinted on each piece of pottery he created.  His pottery was made famous by the rich array and variety of pieces he created during his career.  He signed his work "B. Hilton, Blackburn, NC".   He would often write on the bottom of his pottery codes he used to maintain records of successes.  Collectors seek out pieces with these codes.  Pottery enthusiasts continue to enjoy his work that often was reminiscent of pottery done in the 1920's and 1930's.
